03 — L'histoire complète
Magnard-Vuibert: The Education Division of the Albin Michel Group
Magnard-Vuibert is the education division of the Albin Michel group, one of the leading independent publishers in France. Founded in 1933 by Roger Magnard – inventor of the iconic holiday exercise book – the group is today the 3rd largest educational publishing group in France, covering the entire academic journey from kindergarten to higher education.
The education division brings together four brands with complementary positioning:
- Magnard: educational publishing from kindergarten through the baccalaureate – textbooks, activity books, supplementary materials. This is the group’s historic brand, known notably for the Remi et Colette reading method.
- Vuibert: higher education, competitive exam preparation, professional and general public publications.
- Delagrave: specialist in vocational and technical education, from middle school to advanced vocational diplomas. Founded in 1865, Delagrave covers over 50% of initial training qualifications with more than 500 titles and 60,000 digital resources.
- De Boeck Superieur: university-level publishing and higher education – textbooks, reference works, and digital resources for students and university instructors.
Beyond print, Magnard-Vuibert has undertaken a deep digital transformation of its content: interactive digital textbooks, educational video capsules, digital learning paths, granular resources, and applications. Video has become a central medium in modern textbooks – short capsules that illustrate a concept, accompany an exercise, or enrich a lesson.
The Challenge: Hosting Educational Content on Sovereign Infrastructure
The French Public Education Context
Magnard-Vuibert is a supplier to France’s national education system. Its digital textbooks and resources are used in thousands of public schools, by minor students governed by strict data protection rules.
This context imposes specific requirements:
- Data sovereignty: educational content and student browsing data must not pass through servers located outside the European Union.
- Enhanced GDPR compliance: protecting minors’ data is a major concern in the education sector – authorities (CNIL, national education) are particularly vigilant.
- No third-party trackers: students watching a video capsule in their digital textbook must not be exposed to advertising cookies or tracking by American platforms.
- Institutional requirements: local authorities and school districts that fund digital textbooks demand guarantees about the hosting of associated resources.
The Limitations of Vimeo for Public Education
Magnard-Vuibert used Vimeo to host its educational video capsules. Functionally, Vimeo met the basic need – distributing videos embedded in digital textbooks. But in terms of sovereignty, the situation became untenable:
- US-based servers: student viewing data passed through American servers, subject to the Cloud Act and US regulations.
- Cookies and trackers: the Vimeo player drops third-party cookies, posing a compliance issue in a school environment.
- Data transfers outside the EU: since the invalidation of the Privacy Shield (Schrems II ruling), transferring personal data to the United States is legally fragile – a risk Magnard-Vuibert could no longer assume with its public sector clients.
- No sovereignty guarantee: impossible to certify to local authorities and school districts that educational videos intended for minors were hosted in France.
Four Brands, Four Identities
The added complexity lay in the group’s multi-brand structure. Each brand – Magnard, Vuibert, Delagrave, De Boeck Superieur – has:
- Its own editorial identity and pedagogical positioning.
- Its own production teams managing their own catalogs of digital content.
- Its own digital textbooks with video capsules specific to each subject and level.
A solution was needed that would allow each brand to manage its own video space independently, while benefiting from a shared infrastructure that met sovereignty requirements.
The Videas Solution: A Sovereign Video Space per Brand
Magnard-Vuibert chose Videas to replace Vimeo and host all of its educational video content on a sovereign French infrastructure.
1. A Dedicated Space for Each Brand
Videas deployed an independent video space for each of the group’s four brands:
- Each brand has its own catalog, organized according to its editorial logic (by subject, level, collection).
- Each brand’s production teams manage their space independently – upload, organization, publishing – without dependence on other brands.
- Each space can be customized to match the brand’s visual identity.
- Everything runs on a shared infrastructure managed by Videas, simplifying administration for the group’s digital management.
This multi-space architecture reflects Magnard-Vuibert’s organizational reality: brands that are autonomous in their editorial production, united by a shared technical infrastructure.
2. Sovereign Hosting in France
All videos from the four brands are hosted on servers located in France:
- Guaranteed sovereignty: educational content and viewing data remain under French jurisdiction, with no transfers to the United States or any third country.
- Native GDPR compliance: no personal data transmitted to third parties during viewing – a critical point when users are minor students.
- Meeting institutional requirements: Magnard-Vuibert can certify to its public sector clients (school districts, local authorities, schools) that its videos are hosted in France, on sovereign infrastructure.
For an educational publisher that supplies the national education system, this sovereignty guarantee is not a luxury – it’s a necessary condition to continue offering video-enriched digital textbooks in the public sector.
3. Cookie-Free Player Integrated into Digital Textbooks
Magnard-Vuibert’s video capsules are integrated directly into the digital textbooks used by students and teachers:
- No cookies, no ads: the Videas player drops no trackers and displays no advertising content. A 12-year-old student watching a biology capsule in their digital textbook is not tracked by advertising networks.
- Embed integration: videos are inserted via embed codes into digital textbook platforms (Edulib and others), without disrupting the user experience.
- Adaptive streaming: quality automatically adjusts to the school’s network – smooth playback even on shared school connections serving dozens of students.
- Universal compatibility: the player works on all devices used in schools – computers, tablets, interactive whiteboards.
4. Migration from Vimeo
Videas supported Magnard-Vuibert through the complete migration of its content from Vimeo:
- Catalog transfer: all educational video capsules were migrated to Videas infrastructure.
- Integration updates: Vimeo embed codes in digital textbooks were replaced with Videas embeds.
- Service continuity: the migration was carried out without access interruption for schools and teachers.
- Re-encoding to adaptive streaming: videos are streamed in HLS for optimal playback on all devices and connections.
Results: A Video Infrastructure Compliant with Public Education Requirements
The migration to Videas enabled Magnard-Vuibert to secure its video infrastructure in the face of growing requirements from the public education sector.
Sovereignty Achieved: - All of the group’s video content is now hosted in France, on sovereign infrastructure. - Magnard-Vuibert can confidently respond to public tenders and guarantee requests from local authorities. - GDPR compliance is native and verifiable – a competitive advantage in an educational publishing market where protecting minors’ data has become a selection criterion.
Brand Autonomy: - Each brand manages its video catalog independently, with its own teams and editorial logic. - Adding new video capsules is simple and fast – upload, organize, publish – with no technical dependence. - The multi-space structure allows each brand to maintain its identity while benefiting from shared infrastructure.
End of Vimeo Dependence: - No more third-party cookies in digital textbooks viewed by minor students. - No more data transfers to the United States. - No more legal risk tied to evolving transatlantic data regulations. - Controlled costs with transparent pricing, without the billing surprises tied to Vimeo’s bandwidth-based model.
Why Videas for Educational Publishers and Education Stakeholders?
The Magnard-Vuibert case illustrates why digital sovereignty has become essential for publishers serving the public education sector:
- Sovereign hosting in France: French servers, French jurisdiction, no data transfers outside the EU – compliant with national education and local authority requirements.
- Multi-space architecture: a dedicated video space per brand or entity, with autonomous management and shared infrastructure.
- Cookie-free, ad-free player: no trackers, no personal data collection – essential when users are minor students.
- Migration from Vimeo: complete support for transferring existing video catalogs without service interruption.
- Digital textbook integration: embed compatible with educational distribution platforms (Edulib, LMS, etc.).
- Native GDPR compliance: verifiable and certifiable protection of minors’ data.
Videas supports Magnard-Vuibert in securing its educational video infrastructure, providing sovereign hosting that enables France’s 3rd largest educational publisher to continue enriching its textbooks with video – in full compliance with public sector requirements.
