Institut Huaxia: 20 Years of Traditional Chinese Medicine Teaching in French-Speaking Switzerland

Institut Huaxia is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) school founded over twenty years ago in the heart of French-speaking Switzerland. Directed by Mme Chen Gesheng, a graduate of Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and former physician at the Guilin TCM Hospital, the institute trains professional practitioners in acupuncture, Tui Na, Chinese pharmacopoeia, Qi Gong, and dietetics.

The institution holds strong accreditations attesting to its pedagogical rigor: OrTra MA approved, ASCA and Eduqua certified, RME recognized, and compliant with the requirements of the Swiss Federal Diploma in Naturopathy. A team of approximately ten professors – experienced practitioners trained in both China and Switzerland – delivers teaching rooted in tradition and adapted to Western standards.

The degree program spans seven modules (M1 to M7) over four or more years, in a hybrid format combining in-person classes and video conference sessions. Alongside professional training, the institute offers Qi Gong and Tai Ji classes open to the general public, held four times per week at the Centre de Sante Energie in Geneva (Eaux-Vives neighborhood).

It was as an extension of these Qi Gong classes that Institut Huaxia turned to Videas to launch its video channel: videos.institut-huaxia.org.

The Challenge: Making Qi Gong Practice Accessible Between Classes

A Discipline That Requires Regular Practice

Qi Gong is a distinct branch of traditional Chinese medicine, with origins dating back over 4,000 years. At the intersection of movement, breathing, and meditation, its practice relies on the regular repetition of precise sequences – postures, slow movements, breathing exercises – whose benefits manifest through consistency.

However, in-person classes in Geneva are held four times per week at fixed times. Between sessions, practitioners are left with only their memory: what was the sequence of movements? How was the hand positioned at that moment? What was the associated breathing pattern?

Without a visual reference, the quality of independent practice degrades quickly, particularly for beginners. And for more advanced students, the absence of a model between classes limits deeper exploration.

The Geographic Limitations of In-Person Classes

Institut Huaxia’s Qi Gong classes are held in Geneva. But the French-speaking audience interested in quality TCM and Qi Gong instruction extends well beyond:

  • Students in the degree program come from across French-speaking Switzerland – Lausanne, Fribourg, Sion – and can’t always travel to Geneva for Qi Gong classes.
  • French-speaking practitioners in neighboring France, Belgium, or Canada seek authentic instruction from China-trained teachers.
  • Alumni wish to continue practicing with the teachers they know, regardless of where they live.

The Constraints of an Educational Institution

Institut Huaxia is a teaching institution, not a technology company:

  • The team is composed of TCM practitioners and teachers, not developers.
  • The video solution must be simple to manage daily for the teaching team.
  • The health and training context demands a respectful framework: no advertising, no trackers, no personal data exposed to third parties.
  • The teaching videos represent precious expertise – they must be protected and monetized appropriately.

The Videas Solution: Qi Gong Video Course Packs

Institut Huaxia chose Videas to host and sell its online Qi Gong video packs via a dedicated channel.

1. Themed Packs for Purchase

Rather than a monthly subscription, Institut Huaxia opted for a pack-based sales model:

  • Practitioners purchase video packs grouped by theme or Qi Gong sequence.
  • Each pack grants permanent access to the videos after purchase – no limited duration, no renewal to manage.
  • This model is suited for use complementary to in-person classes: you buy the pack corresponding to what you’re working on in class, and review it as many times as needed.
  • No monthly commitment – practitioners buy at their own pace, pack by pack, as they progress.

This choice reflects the institute’s pedagogical philosophy: “Work, patience, and humility.” Qi Gong practice is built progressively, and the pack model allows each person to advance at their own pace without recurring financial pressure.

2. Videos Filmed by the Institute’s Teachers

The sessions available on the Videas channel are filmed by Institut Huaxia’s own teachers – notably Mme Chen Gesheng and Philippe Claus, who have been teaching Qi Gong and Tai Ji in Geneva for over twenty years:

  • Pedagogical continuity: practitioners find the same teachers as in class, with the same sequences and approach.
  • Teaching quality: each movement is demonstrated with the precision and detail that traditional Qi Gong transmission demands.
  • Revision support: the videos serve as a reference for reworking postures, transitions, and breathing between classes.

3. A Technical Framework Suited for the Health Context

The Videas player deployed for Institut Huaxia respects the requirements of a health training institution:

  • No cookies, no ads: practitioners watch their sessions in a clean, respectful environment, without third-party trackers or commercial solicitation.
  • GDPR compliance: no personal data transmitted to third parties during viewing.
  • Hosting in France: videos are stored on French servers, under European jurisdiction – a relevant point for a Swiss institute concerned with data protection.

4. Autonomous Management by the Teaching Team

The Videas interface allows the Institut Huaxia team to manage its video catalog independently:

  • Upload and publish new sessions without technical expertise.
  • Organize the catalog by practice type, level, or teacher.
  • Manage packs and pricing from the Videas back-office.
  • No infrastructure to maintain: Videas handles hosting, encoding, and delivery.

Results: Teaching Extended Beyond the Classroom

The Institut Huaxia video channel on Videas complements the institute’s educational offering.

Facilitated Independent Practice: - Students and Qi Gong class participants have a visual reference for practicing between sessions. - Independent practice quality improves: movements, postures, and breathing are available on video to be reviewed as many times as needed. - Teachers can direct their students to specific sessions to complement class work.

Expanded Accessibility: - Practitioners beyond Geneva – French-speaking Switzerland, neighboring France, the Francophone world – access Qi Gong instruction from China-trained teachers. - Alumni continue practicing with the teachers they know, regardless of where they live. - The on-demand video format enables practicing at any time, without schedule constraints.

Expertise Valorization: - The filmed sessions represent a capitalization of the institute’s pedagogical know-how, accumulated over more than twenty years of teaching. - Video pack sales generate additional revenue beyond in-person training. - The video channel serves as a showcase of Huaxia’s teaching for people discovering the institute.

Why Videas for Schools and Training Institutes?

The Institut Huaxia case illustrates how a specialized training institution can extend its teaching through video without technical investment:

  • Video pack sales: purchase model, no subscription, suited for complementary use alongside in-person classes.
  • Custom video channel: dedicated site in the institute’s colors, catalog organized by discipline.
  • Cookie-free, ad-free player: clean, respectful environment suited for health and training contexts.
  • French sovereign hosting: data protected under European jurisdiction, GDPR compliance.
  • Simple management: upload, organization, and publishing managed independently by the teaching team, without technical skills.

Videas supports Institut Huaxia in extending its Qi Gong teaching beyond the walls of its Geneva classroom, providing professional video infrastructure that meets the requirements of an accredited health training institution.
