What RGAA means for a video
In practice, four requirements apply to every video and to the player that delivers it.
- Every video must carry synchronized subtitles and a text transcript
- Audio description is required when information is conveyed only by the image
- Every player control should work by keyboard, with a visible focus indicator
- Player and subtitle contrast should stay readable
RGAA at Videas
The Videas player follows RGAA good practice: every control (play, seek, volume, fullscreen, chapters, subtitles, settings) has a keyboard equivalent, and focus rings stay visible on every interactive element. Scribe automatically generates subtitles and a transcript for each video, to review in the editor before publishing. The player accepts several audio tracks, so an audio-described track, which you produce, can be offered alongside the original. Chapters, which RGAA does not require, are created from the same tool and make a long video easier to navigate. Videas issues no RGAA certification, though: compliance is declared after an audit, and it covers the whole page that hosts the player, not the player alone.
Frequently asked questions
What does RGAA stand for?+
RGAA stands for General Reference Framework for Accessibility Improvement, France's digital accessibility framework, currently in version 4.1.
Is RGAA mandatory?+
Yes, for public services and large companies above certain revenue thresholds, and increasingly expected beyond that by public and private buyers alike.
Is the Videas player RGAA compliant?+
It follows RGAA good practice: full keyboard navigation, visible focus rings, readable contrast, subtitles, transcripts and multiple audio tracks for audio description. Videas issues no certification for it, though: compliance is declared after an audit, and it covers the whole page, not the player alone.
Does Scribe alone make a video RGAA compliant?+
Scribe covers subtitling and transcription, two of several RGAA criteria. Full compliance also depends on the player and the page hosting it.
What's the difference between RGAA and WCAG?+
RGAA is the French implementation of WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), the international standard. Its version 4.1 aligns with WCAG 2.1.
What's the difference between RGAA and GDPR?+
RGAA governs digital accessibility, GDPR governs personal data protection. They are two distinct frameworks, each with its own implications for a video platform.
